Star Trecking Across the Universe.......

We left the hotel at Limorge, to make our way down to Carcassonne – the highlight of my week in France. Somewhere on a steep hill on the motorway, 5th gear suddenly and without warning, disappeared. After a moment of deep panic, Mike realised we had 4 other gears which seemed to be ok, so we carried on! We stopped in a services and took a look, then found when we tried to reverse out of the space that reverse gear had gone with 5th gear!!! OMG. So what to do – FI we carried on – “Star trecking across the Universe always going forward cos we can’t find reverse” and if that failed we pushed!!

Carcassonne was everything we expected it to be. A real French village but still functioning inside the huge Medieval castle walls, (Repaired in the 18th Century, so old since then) shops, Cathedral, hotels, the lot. We spent a very happy day there.

From Carcassonne we made our way to the Aude, we stopped in the little village called Couiza for coffee & beer. We stayed in a village called Sougraine, in the Aude, a mountainous region. It’s very beautiful, with canyons and walking areas. Would love to go back. Got to the Hotel Elise Au Soleil, which was very quaint and ancient. Very comfortable. We went off for a walk and started along one of the circular walks, obviously without preparation and only wearing sandals, we soon had to turn back because of the mud. We ate in the hotel, the food was very simple and local – delicious.

Oradour Sur Glanne

The next day we drove down to Oradour Sur Glanne, the site of the massacre at the end of the 2nd WW. I thought it would be very upsetting but it was ok. I didn’t stay in the site very long. Chris and Mike had a good look around and I stayed with the dog and read my book and drank white wine!!

Normandy Landings

Close to the Normandy Coast is Bayeau, where the tapestries originated! The Cathederal is fantastic - sorry, but not in any God type of way but structurally and historically. We really enjoyed and we nearlly sat in the sun and had a beer but they didn't have a licence so we drove to Tours....

Chris is interested in wars. not joining in or anything so silly but for us it's looking at the price of freedom, which is the catch phrase they use in Arromanches les Bains - the beach in Normandy where the British Soldiers came ashore in 1944. Today we had fabulous weather; blue skies and loads of sun bit different to the 6th June 1944! Chris and Mike watched the film footage from the landings but I didn't go - there wouldn't have been enough tissues!!! Next we went to Longues Sur Mer to see the German guns - they were pretty impressive - huge.
